We Ski 2016

In 2016, WeSKi will be offered on a Sunday afternoon for the first time. Dates are Sundays, January 10, 17 & 24, 3:00 - 5:00 PM at Timber Ridge Resort.

"WeSki" is a program jointly sponsored by the North American Vasa and the Vasa Ski Club.  It was developed in response to the need in our area to provide an affordable entry-level, small group instructional experience in the sport of cross-country  skiing that’s age and ability appropriate. Three weekly 1-hour sessions are offered. A tasty, nutritious meal follows each lesson to facilitate whole-family participation and socialization. This year, kids enrolled in WeSki can participate in the Junior Vasa for FREE! They will be given a special voucher to do so.

Nice Skis, Nice Suit!

It pays to be a member of the Vasa Ski Club!

At our annual fun kick-off and glide into the season party at the Filling Station last Sunday member Kelly Guswiler won the grand prize Madshus skis.

Kelly was encouraged to participate on the VSC Michigan Cup Team ski series by Nancy Briggs...and she looks good in the clubs new ski suit! Details on VSC activities are at vasaskiclub.org

Don't forget to check the site for Lakes of the North race updates.  The weather man is calling for snow and you know us, we're optimists!  Lets race.  Spread the word!

Michigan Cup - Let's Get it Back!

There's still hope for a great ski race season!  So check out the Michigan Cup schedule, pick out the races you want to tackle, and plan to join the Vasa Ski Club as we vie for the coveted "Michigan Cup."  It belongs back in TC! And there's plenty of talent in the Club to pull it off if everyone makes an effort. The Michigan Cup is all about recreational skiing, and it's not just for the hot shot skiers. Folks from all over the state compete at all levels. Participating is a great way to challenge yourself and nudge you to a higher level of skiing.... and more enjoyment of the sport. Plus you get all the fitness benefits!

The Michigan Cup calendar can be found at http://www.vasaskiclub.org/michigan-cup-racing-2.  Pick your events and plan to join the fun with Michigan skiers just like you. And help bring "the Cup" back home where it belongs!

A good place to start is the VSC-sponsored race "Lakes of the North" in Mancelona, December 19. It's FREE to VSC members (including lunch!). Also be sure to sign up for races in the Vasa Festival of Races at Timber Ridge, Feb. 13/14.

Your MI Cup reps are Glenn Goodman (glenn@gbgpainting.com), Gussie Peterson (gussiepeterson@gmail.com), and Melinda Mitchell (melindajam@aol.com). Feel free to contact them for information or to arrange car pooling. A great resource for MI Cup and statewide XC ski happenings is www.nordicskiracer.com.

Volunteer Coaches Needed!

The Vasa Ski Club relies of the generosity of volunteer coaches to provide ski instruction for the participants of WeSki.  If you are willing to serve as a coach, please contact Judy Vajda at judyvajda@charter.net.

A Coaches' Clinic will take place on Sunday, January 3, 2:00 - 4:00 PM at Timber Ridge. Amy Powell will be directing the Skating Clinic and Eric Okerstrom will be directing the Classic Clinic. A soup/salad/bread dinner will follow.

VSC Ski Reports

The VSC is happy to announce that Tim Jenema will be posting periodic club reports on Vasa Pathway ski conditions for Nordicskiracer.com, a resource that's widely used by skiers all over the state and beyond.  Tim has promised accurate, objective reporting on conditions for both fat bikers and skiers with a positive spin. Now, if we can only get some snow so Tim can get on with his reports!

Ski for Light, Inc. (SFL) is an all-volunteer organization that enables blind, visually- and mobility-impaired adults to cross-country ski.  Each year, SFL conducts a week-long event that attracts more than 250 participants and ski guides from all over the globe.  This year’s event is at Shanty Creek!  Volunteer guides are desperately needed to allow all who want to attend to be paired with a guide.New guides receive a full day of training.  For the rest of the week, they are paired with experienced visually impaired participants to build skills as safe and effective guides.

Last January, Melinda Hollands, a Traverse City resident who is legally blind, joined SFL in Colorado for the first time.  According to Melinda: SFL was an amazing experience! I advanced my skiing technique and participated in my first 10K race. I also met wonderful people in this area who are passionate about cross country skiing. I encourage each of you to thoughtfully consider becoming a part of SFL this year at Shanty Creek.

The 41st annual Ski for Light International Week will take place Jan. 24 - Jan. 30, 2016 at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire, Michigan.  If you are interested in attending either event as a guide or participant, visit www.sfl.org, contact them at info@sfl.org, or visit Ski for Light on Facebook.
