Michigan Cup-Save The Cup

One of the big goals of the Vasa Ski Club is to hang on to all three Michigan Cup trophies for the upcoming ski season.  We worked hard to earn them--- let's keep them in Traverse City!  Right now, they are proudly on display at Brick Wheels, Check them out if you want to pay homage to our great past season and be inspired for the next! The Michigan Cup Committee recently announced the tentative race schedule for 2016-17. Whether you aim to do all of the races or just one, every point matters! Here's the schedule as it currently stands:  Michigan Cup.

Pay special attention to our hometown races, the VSC-sponsored Lakes of the North Race (Dec. 17; free to VSC members) and the North American Vasa (Feb. 11/12). Racing is a great way to meet XC skiers across the state who share your love of the sport and join them for some friendly competition.  It's also a wonderful way to stay motivated and fit in the winter. Hope to see you out there this winter!

Who Likes A Party?

The VSC is hosting our annual season kick off party at The Filling Station. Did you join us last year? If you didn't know they make the world's greatest pizza. VSC Yurt

Thanks to the generosity of Gordon Waggoner, owner of the Timber Ridge Resort, the Vasa Ski Club (VSC) will be able to use a new yurt on his property as a winter clubhouse.  A yurt is a circular tent on a wooden framework*.  This lovely 24'-diameter building will become available for our use by mid-December.  It's use will be limited to VSC members and our invited guests.  The only utility available this winter will be electricity, for lights & heat.  Any cooking must be done outdoors on a grill.  Club members can donate or loan furnishings or equipment to make our clubhouse cozy and inviting.  We are looking for a person (or persons) to coordinate the furnishing & equipping of the yurt.  Contact John Morris at (319) 210-2137 if you want to volunteer for this assignment.  We hope VSC members will make good use of our clubhouse this ski season.  It will be a great place to socialize, relax, and enjoy one another's company close to the ski trails we love.  The yurt is located at Lot #85 on Abigail Ave. at Timber Ridge. To see more information about yurts, go to Pacific Yurts at www.yurts.com.

Sundays, January 15, 22, & 29, 3:00 – 5:00 PM at Timber Ridge. “WeSki” is the popular program open to the community and designed to introduce beginning skiers to the fun and basic skills of XC skiing. VSC members serve as volunteer instructors and cheer leaders. Kids of all ages participate in a 1-hour lesson, followed by a light meal. Orientation for instructors will take place the week before at Timber Ridge, also 3:00 – 5:00. Stay tuned for more information! Contact Linda Deneen

Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:00 starting October 12 at Timber Ridge.  SheSkis is a weekly program for women skiers of all ages and abilities. The 1st session is to plan the season, followed by dry land training on the following Wednesday, the 19th. SheSkis will continue on Wednesday evenings – same time and place - throughout the winter season. As the program moves from “dirt to snow”, there will be several lesson nights offering both skate and classic instruction, as well as other programs to improve your fitness and skills. Questions? Contact Linda Deneen

Coaches Are Needed For Our Kids

The VSC Middle School Ski Program is growing. We expect the numbers to surpass 100 this year as the program builds on its success. We are looking for club members to help us teach this incredible group of kids. Each and every coach makes a difference to the program every day they attend. This has a lasting impact on our kids. Come on out and give us a hand. You will be glad you did.

Midwest Nordic Rendezvous

January 7th & 8th you can join Vasa Ski Club and Greg Rhodes for technique training for all ages and abilities. Greg was All-American Nordic at Carleton College, and owns Endurance Athlete. He has a PhD in exercise physiology and is PSIA-certified in the areas of Nordic, Telemark, Alpine, and Snowboard. Greg has a passion for teaching and living an active lifestyle, and continues to compete in various endurance athletic events, including 13 Elite Wave Birkie Classic races.  For more information on this event please check out the VSC website.
