Yes Sir Winter Has Arrived!

Welcome to Ski Tracks the newsletter of the Vasa Ski Club. Winter has finally arrived. Hopefully you are all hitting the trail and getting things packed in nicely. Here is what the club is up to. Get involved and I promise it will be a great time.

Traverse City’s First Wax Class Room

Timber Ridge and the Vasa Ski Club have added a wax classroom to help the Middle School Jr ski program and get kids waxing skis. Every skier that skis from the Timber Ridge facility will reap the benefits. The wax room will be open for use to all skiers outside of the Tuesday/Thursday 3-5:30 middle school program…check it out next time you are at Timber Ridge. Thanks to the generous support from Timber Ridge, North American Vasa, St Frances Ski Team, Vasa Ski Club, Brick Wheels, Home Depot, Andy Rockwood, BJ Ingerwersen, Tim Jenema, Matt Vajda, Glenn Goodman and Randy Smith for construction and donations.

Wax Drive

Since we have a new super sweet wax room for our junior program, we need to stock it with wax. Please bring any and all way to the Lakes of the North race this weekend. We need a variety of glide and kick wax for several hundred pairs of skis.

Michigan Cup News

Welcome to our first weekend of Michigan Cup racing, thanks to all that white stuff falling from the sky!  It's been two years since we started racing this early in the season. Bring it!

The Michigan Cup opening race on Saturday, December 17, 11:00 is the VSC's very own "Lakes of the North" race in Mancelona. It's free to VSC members (includes lunch), so be sure your membership's up-to-date before you arrive.

The following day is the Forbush Corner time trial, rescheduled from December 10th to the new date of Sunday, December the 18th, 11:00 for full Michigan Cup points. This date is now open since Michawye will not be hosting a race this year.

Let's get started on our points! For race details, see www.nordicskiracer.com

Big Thanks to The Filling Station?

I hope you were there. It seemed like plenty of folks were. Good times and best pizza EVER!

WeSki Instructors Needed

The Vasa Ski Club relies on the generosity of volunteer coaches to provide ski instruction for the participants of WeSki and that’s where VSC members come in! If you are interested in helping fledgling skiers develop skills on the skinny skis, please let us know!

Contact Judy Vajda by next Friday, December 16th with the following information

  • If you are able to volunteer this season
  • Your preference for teaching (skate or classic or either), (beginner, intermediate or advanced)
  • If you are attending the coachs' clinic

We Ski Program dates are January 15, 22 & 29 from  3:00–5:00.

  • Check in: 2:30
  • Lessons: 3:00-4:00
  • Light Meal/Socializing: 4:00-5:00

Group lessons, both skate and classic, at age and skill appropriate levels - are provided the first hour, followed by a tasty, nutritious, light meal to facilitate whole family participation. Costs remain low at $45/family or $30/individual. Rental equipment is available at Timber Ridge or Brick Wheels. The RACING CLINIC will be held once again on all three Sundays, even though this group is well beyond "entry-level" skiing!

To give our WeSki participants a great experience on skis, we need 20+ instructors. Please let Judy know if you can instruct this season. Ideally, we need your help for all three sessions. This brings great consistency to the program and participants, but if you aren't able to commit to all three afternoons, just let Judy know which dates work for you. Your time is greatly appreciated! The time commitment is only during the lesson, 3:00 to 4:00, with a 2:30 arrival to meet with your groups and get them out on the trail.  You are certainly encouraged to stay for the light meal.

A Coaches' Clinic will take place on Saturday, January 7, 3:00 - 5:00 PM at Timber Ridge. http://www.vasaskiclub.org/midwest-nordic-rendezvoux-in-tc-jan-7-8

Nationally renowned PSIA Nordic Coach Greg Rhodes will lead the session. This is a great opportunity to hone your coaching skills or learn them for the first time. This event is held in conjunction with the 2-day Midwest Nordic Rendezvous event.

Winter Trails Day January 7th

Once again Traverse City will join with communities across the nation in celebrating Winter Trails Day.  The goal is to introduce new people to the joys of the outdoors in winter.  TART will host the local Winter Trails Day at the Timber Ridge Resort on January 7th from 10:30 am until 2:00 pm.  Both children and adults of all ages can try new snow sports such as: cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking.

The Vasa Ski Club will provide guides to take small groups of skiers onto the Timber Ridge trails.  If you would like to introduce new skiers to the sport you love, sign up to be a guide.  Groups will go out from the lodge at 10:30, 11:30 and 12:30 to learn the basics.  Guides for both classic & skate styles are needed.

To sign up as a volunteer contact John Morris at xcskicouple@aol.com or call him at (319) 210-2137.  At least 2-3 more guides are needed.

Midwest Nordic Rendezvous

January 7th & 8th you can join Vasa Ski Club and Greg Rhodes for technique training for all ages and abilities. Greg was All-American Nordic at Carleton College, and owns Endurance Athlete. He has a PhD in exercise physiology and is PSIA-certified in the areas of Nordic, Telemark, Alpine, and Snowboard. Greg has a passion for teaching and living an active lifestyle, and continues to compete in various endurance athletic events, including 13 Elite Wave Birkie Classic races.  For more information on this event please check out the VSC website.
