The snow comes and goes but we are still skiing. We hope you are getting outdoors and having some fun. Our middle school kids and Nordic Rocks kids sure are. Whatever you do, get outside and a smile will come to your face. Here is what we have been up to.
NORDIC ROCKS ON TV!
After the recent article about the Vasa Ski Club Nordic Rocks Program in the Record Eagle, Channel 7/4 News contacted us to set up some interviews and filming of elementary students on skis. Blair Elementary just barely had enough snow, and Liz Schoolmaster, the PE teacher at Blair, and VSC Board member Gary Faria met there with the reporter from UpNorthLive and led a group of 4th graders in an on-ski session. The kids had a great time as usual, and some were interviewed along with Liz and Gary.
Don’t miss seeing the smiling elementary schoolers skiing the obstacle course on their playground! The segment is scheduled to air Tuesday, January 30 at 6:40 am and again during the 5:00 news on Channel 7/4. Spread the word!
Ankles Flexed, Hips Forward
Michigan Cup racing has been heating up, right along with recent temperatures. Sam Holmes, Glenn Goodman, and Cliff Onthank traveled to Brighton to represent Vasa in the Frosty Freestyle 15K and the Krazy Klassic 12K, held January 13 and 14. In the Frosty, Sam out-paced Jay Woodbeck of Nordic Ski Racer by one second for the win, and Glenn and Cliff both placed in the top ten. Way to go, guys! Thanks for making the trip. Next year, let’s send a women’s contingent too.
A total of 35 Vasa Ski Club members raced the Cote Dame Marie Ski Loppet last weekend. The race was relocated to Forbush Corner this year due to poor snow conditions at Hanson Hills. Our Juniors rocked this challenging course! They swept both podiums: Kelly Klettner, Gwen Urbain, and Tess Crowley finished 1,2,3 for the girls, and Martin Chown, Ryan Miller and Elliot Smith topped the boys division. It was great to see even our newest racers finish strong.
For the women, Gussie Peterson, Laurie Coulter, and Melinda Mitchell were Brumbaugh Cup point earners, with Gussie and Laurie each winning their age group. Nine men raced for team Vasa, with Sam Holmes (2), Kevin Tarras (5), Jamie Somerville (6), and Todd Vigland (10) all in the top ten. It’s a pleasure to be passed by these guys in a race because you get to study excellent technique in action… for about 5 seconds!
Racers, please note a new MI Cup race this year: the Mike Seaman Memorial 10 K Classic, to be held on Sunday, February 4 at Treetops in Gaylord. Let’s recruit our teammates for this event for both Junior and Senior racers. Details on nordicskiracer.com
Best of luck to everyone racing the Noquemanon and at the Masters World Cup!
