Middle School Program
The VSC middle school program wrapped up this past Tuesday at Timber Ridge. We cannot thank the many volunteers enough for this great community program. Big thanks to Fern Spence and Randy Smith that lead the charge for our kids. Our community will reap the benefits of this program for generations to come. Thank you so much.
HS State Championships
The local kids had a great showing at the High School State Championships in Houghton. Mary Lyon 3-peated as the pursuit champion with a dominant comeback performance in the freestyle race. There were many other notable finishes with VSC kids taking home about a dozen medals. Stay tuned for a more complete article to come soon. Three of our local racers are on their way to Park City UT for the Junior National Chanpionships. Good luck to Mary Lyon, Isaac Coulter and Arielle Jean. Go get em VASA.
Vasa Victories Continue
MI Cup racers hungry for more after two days of Vasa races converged on Forbush Corner for another weekend of racing, February 17 and 18. Saturday’s Forbush Freestyle 17K featured a hilly two-loop course that was firm and fast. Team Vasa’s Sam Holmes edged Jay Woodbeck (NSR) to win in a smokin’ 44:36! Milan Baic, Cliff Onthank, Glenn Goodman, Ken Dawson, and Randy Smith rounded out the men’s squad. Gussie Peterson, Karen Dawson, Melinda Mitchell, and Amy Wilks represented the women.
On Sunday, the Hanson Hills Classic relocated to Forbush due to poor snow conditions at Hanson Hills. This interval start race included a flatter portion of Forbush’s West Trail system and some choice hills on the Rollercoaster Trail in a two-loop course of about 11K. Sam Holmes scored another impressive victory, beating Kyle Hanson (NSR) by 16 seconds. Curt Peterson and Jeremy Treadwell joined Cliff, Ken, Glenn, Randy, Gussie, Karen, and Melinda in the classic race. Vasa Ski Club racers brought home a bunch of age group medals, skied strong to the end, and completed a full Brumbaugh Cup roster (5 men, 3 women) both days! A special sportsmanship award goes to Ken and Karen Dawson (welcome additions to VSC and MI Cup veterans) for being friendly and encouraging, even in the heat of competition. Newer racers appreciate knowing that someone is trying to pass, and a kind word in doing so goes a long way in making the sport more fun for everyone.
Vasa Ski Club has now moved into second place for the Brumbaugh Cup (senior skiers in single race events) and, at last report, held the lead in the MI Cup standings. Who knows what the weather holds for the rest of the season, so let’s go out and race our best when we can!
