Ski Swap Next Saturday

Gear up for the cross country ski season at the annual Vasa Ski Club "Nordic Ski Swap" Saturday October 13th from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM at Brick Wheels in Traverse City.  This is a great chance to buy both used and new ski equipment--or sell some of your gear.  The best deals of the year for Nordic gear will be found here.

Drop off your used Nordic skis, boots, or other gear on Friday, October 12th from 4-7 PM.  You can get the best deal of the year on Timber Ridge season passes, TART Grooming Badges and North American Vasa registrations.

Proceeds from the swap help fund Vasa Ski Club programs to promote Nordic skiing in the Grand Traverse Region. Vasa Ski Club programs include the TCAPS Middle School Program, Nordic Rocks, We Ski and She Ski. Each of these programs is geared to get people of all ages in the region out of doors and on skis. For more information email us at skitherapy1@gmail.com, check us out on Facebook or at vasaskiclub.org.

The Vasa Ski Club is hosting a CXC Coach’s Clinic October 21.  Emphasis of the clinic is basic Nordic technique.  This clinic is for everyone interested in learning the skills of basic skiing body control and what makes an efficient skier.  Reply to mike.tarnow@gmail.com if you are interested in this clinic; it is free to Vasa Ski Club members.  Tell your friends.

Hickory Meadows Survey… The results are in!

Recently the regional Joint Recreational Authority surveyed participants about their use of Hickory Meadows and other area parks. We had a good showing by our ski community, with overall results indicating that XC skiing was the second most popular activity at Hickory Meadows (69 percent of people said they used it for hiking; 44 percent said cross-country skiing; 35 percent said dog-walking; and 33 percent said jogging).

Please continue to make your voices heard! This is an ongoing visioning process that will determine the future use of the Meadows and other parks such as the Open Space and Cathedral Barn. Hickory Meadows is a beautiful park that offers XC skiing opportunity for all levels. There is so much future potential for our ski community – let’s take the time to help guide this process.

Please attend one or both of two upcoming events by the Recreational Authority. Share this info with friends and family too!

Oct. 10 Public Workshop – 6 to 8 p.m. – Cathedral Barn

Results are scheduled to be presented, and they will educate the community about the Recreational Authority and  identify possible projects and initiatives for both existing properties and future properties or facilities of the authority. There will be a short presentation at 6 p.m. and attendees then will be able to go to different stations and give input.

Nov 14 Public Workshop – 6 to 8 p.m. – Cathedral Barn

This session will build off of the October meeting. There also will be a presentation at that meeting, but then attendees will go into breakout sessions to focus on specific projects and develop a preferred model for the Recreational Authority.

Here’s an opportunity to ski for free at Timber Ridge and share you love of and knowledge of skiing with children.  The Vasa Ski Club hosts middle-school students Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at Timber Ridge January and February.  We do a little instruction, but mostly have fun and ski.  We are in need of adults looking to have fun and help out; both inside helping with organization and outside skiing.  Please email paulbcrowley@yahoo.com if willing to help.
