BECOME A CROSS COUNTRY SKI GUIDE!
Ski for Light, Inc. (SFL) is an all-volunteer organization that enables blind, visually- and mobility-impaired adults to cross-country ski. Each year, SFL conducts a week-long event that attracts more than 250 participants and ski guides from all over the globe. This year’s event is at Shanty Creek! Volunteer guides are desperately needed to allow all who want to attend to be paired with a guide.
Guides and skiers generally ski adjacent to one another in parallel sets of tracks that are prepared specially for SFL. The guide offers direction, instructional tips, support, and encouragement. New guides receive a full day of training. For the rest of the week, they are paired with experienced visually impaired participants to build skills as safe and effective guides. Ski guides discover that, in the process of giving, they are getting as much or more back in return.
Last January, Melinda Hollands, a Traverse City resident who is legally blind, joined SFL in Colorado for the first time. According to Melinda: SFL was an amazing experience! I advanced my skiing technique and participated in my first 10K race. More importantly to me, I met some incredible people and grew as a person from summoning the courage to travel to Colorado, all by myself! While preparing for my SFL adventure, I was blessed to become part of SheSkis and enjoy the beautiful Timber Ridge and VASA ski trails. I also met wonderful people in this area who are passionate about cross country skiing. I encourage each of you to thoughtfully consider becoming a part of SFL this year at Shanty Creek. It is an opportunity to represent northern Michigan to an international audience of skiers. And most of all, it is an opportunity of a lifetime to experience the camaraderie, exhilaration, and joy of skiing with an amazing group of people.
The 41st annual Ski for Light International Week will take place Jan. 24 - Jan. 30, 2016 at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire, Michigan. If you are interested in attending either event as a guide or participant, visit www.sfl.org, contact them at email@example.com, or visit Ski for Light on Facebook. Check out the map of Strombolis Lake Vasa Forest. This land surrounded by the VASA Forest was purchased this past year by the State of Michigan. They have already identified that this could be an addition to the Vasa Pathway. So this is a possible future addition to the Vasa Trail network. This will happen as fast as a group of outdoors people forward a plan to DNR and then plan on how to groom and maintain, and follow up with the approval process. The clock is ticking. This would be a great addition to VASA.
