Grades K-5
Nordic Rocks (in school program)

In 2015, Nordic Rocks was initiated by the Vasa Ski Club, aiming to introduce elementary-age children to the world of cross-country skiing. This unique program is integrated into school activities, taking place during PE classes, recess, or occasionally after school.
Vasa Ski Club dedicated resources to provide age-appropriate skis that can be used with any type of boot or shoe, supplying them to local elementary schools. We also offer a suggested curriculum and a list of engaging on-snow activities to support physical education teachers. Collaborating closely with these schools, a team of passionate Vasa Ski Club volunteer coaches ensures the success of the program.
Our primary goal is to acquaint young students and their parents with the joys of cross-country skiing while making it an enjoyable experience. Many of our Nordic Rocks participants continue their skiing journey in middle school through the Nordic Flyers program, eventually transitioning to our high school Nordic ski team.
Over the years, the program has grown steadily. We've distributed over 350 pairs of skis to 15 Traverse City area elementary schools (and one middle school), where they are regularly utilized by more than 2,000 students, weather permitting. In addition to in-school activities, we host two after-school programs at Eastern Elementary and Blair Elementary. Plus, we're excited to introduce Nordic SkiSparks, an after-school cross-country ski instruction program tailored for elementary-aged students.
